Frequently Asked Questions
What is the timetable like for a typical day?
A typical day starts at 8.45am and finishes at 3.00pm; some Sixth Form lessons finish at 4.00pm. Students are expected to stay on site during the school day. Lessons last for 60 minutes; you could have up to 5 lessons during the day. However, you will be allocated study periods on your timetable for independent learning; you will also have time set aside for Christian Living/Extended Project and P.E./ Enrichment Activities once a week.
Do different courses have different entry requirements?
St. Peter’s Catholic Sixth Form has an overall minimum entry requirement and certain subjects have further entry criteria. Entry requirements are detailed on our website.
Do I have to have taken a subject at GCSE to study it at A level?
Not necessarily as there are a greater number of subjects available for you to study at A-level. There may be some subjects you will never have studied before. If you wish to continue studying a subject you have studied at GCSE, see the information on our website under Entry Criteria.
What is the interview like?
All students are interviewed and will be invited to a one-to-one IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) interview. This is really an informal chat to discuss your choice of subjects and to ensure you are on the appropriate pathway. Parents are also invited to attend, if they wish.
What does the offer of a place mean?
After we have interviewed you, we are usually able to offer you a place. This offer will be conditional and will depend on whether you achieve the grades required.
What if I do not achieve the grades required?
It is worth coming in on Enrolment Day, particularly if you are close to the boundary of the required grade so that we can discuss the appropriate pathway with you.
Can I change the subjects I have applied for?
You can change the subjects you have applied for at any time before Enrolment Day. You will be given plenty of opportunity to gather information during Y11, via the Sixth Form Open Evening, your interview, the Induction Day, subject teachers as well as from the website and prospectus. There is a 2-week period at the start of the academic year during which you are allowed to review your subject choices.
Can I visit the Sixth Form at another time, instead of or in addition to the Sixth Form Open Evening?
If you ring the Sixth Form office, a tour will be arranged for you during the school day. Telephone Number: 0121 705 1629
Is there a Sixth Form Uniform?
There is a dress code and it has been selected through consultation with the Student Council. More information is available on the Sixth Form website.
Is it true that financial support is available to help me stay in education after 16?
There is a Sixth Form Bursary Fund which is available to students. The application form is available on the Sixth Form website.
What support is there for additional needs?
We offer personalised timetables for students with additional needs and we have a learning support team in school who will ensure all access requirements are met.
Is it difficult to fit in? Our Sixth Form students are very welcoming and you will make friends quickly.
If you are an external student, you will have a buddy allocated to you who will help you familiarise with the day to day workings of the school. Your form tutor will also help you to settle in quickly.
What if I have other questions?
Please call the Sixth Form office to ask about anything you are not sure of.
How do I apply?
Via an electronic application form which is available on the Sixth Form section of the school website. There are two forms, one for internal students and one which requires additional information for students who are new to St Peter’s.
