Being active, fit and healthy is crucial to the physical and mental well-being of everyone. Physical Education is an important component of the St Peter’s curriculum and is delivered to all pupils. Unless injured, all pupils are expected to participate.
The four primary objectives of physical education are as follows:
- Improved physical fitness;
- Appreciation of physical activity;
- Sportsmanship development;
- Improved social skills.
Pupils experience a broad range of activities in their PE lessons:
- Gaelic Football
School sport is the structured learning and competition which takes place between schools. St. Peter’s extra-curricular activities are extensive and inclusive. We run these clubs in a wide range of sports which develops and broadens the foundations of learning which takes place during the school day in lessons.
We run extra-curricular clubs in the following sports:

- Step Aerobics
St Peter’s has produced some exceptional sporting talents over the years including Jack Grealish, Karen Carney and Dan Evans to name a few. We also have a number of pupils who are competing on the international stage, as well as county teams, in a number of different sports. We are immensely proud of all our athletes and wish them all continued success.
PE as an examined qualification
If pupils opt to study the subject for GCSE or at post sixteen level, our aim is that they are dedicated, confident performers and well-rounded athletes. As well as being technically proficient, they will also be knowledgeable in the theoretical side of the course.
At GCSE, pupils will follow the OCR exam board specification (J587), where we encourage learners to be inspired, motivated and challenged by the subject and enable them to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career pathways. Pupils are required to sit two theory papers, complete an ‘analysing and performance’ task as well as taking part in three sports.
We also offer BTEC Sport for pupils who prefer the modular approach. Whichever qualification pupils opt for, we aim to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well-being.
At A Level, pupils will follow the OCR exam board specification (H555). The course will equip learners with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. This requires them to master the following: develop theoretical knowledge, understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance, understand the key socio-cultural factors, develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance. Pupils are required to sit three theory papers, an oral analysis task, and compete in one sport.
For BTEC Sport, pupils will take part in applied learning that brings together knowledge and understanding with practical and technical skills (601/7218/6). This is achieved through learners performing vocational tasks that encourage the development of appropriate vocational behaviours and transferable skills. Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are valued in both higher education and the workplace. Pupils sit different styles of assessment which include examinations where all learners take the same assessment at the same time, normally with a written outcome and set tasks where learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.
